Af's story begins late into the dawn of time: whenever that was. He was created under an entirely different name back then ( Aerrel ). He was also created to serve in a role that didn't quite fit his personality, suprisingly easy-going for a demon. Several centuries flitted by in this manner: ignoring tasks, mingling with the humans and seducing them out of boredom, poking curiously at anything that kept his interest longer than five seconds. After a while, the monotony got to him, and he decided to leave hell and earth behind for a much cooler climate—heaven and its angels.
But this heaven wasn't quite the same as the places he'd called home before that. In ways, it was much, much worse. Angels were finicky creatures, far more difficult to bond with than humans and crueler than even the most seasoned demons at hell's inner rings. They ignored him, and foolishly, Af stayed with the hope that someone might notice him. But he starved in heaven, unable to coax any of the angels into sin. At least, until he met the true Af, his future and current namesake. Af was an angel of the highest ranking order and kinder than most. Af believed this to be true until he found himself imprisoned and sealed by the angel who'd taken pity on him. Time passed in a strange way for Af then, tortured needlessly and torn within an inch of his sanity from both starvation and the very black and white nature of an angel's psyche. During one of these particular "sessions", Af charms the angel into a false sense of security long enough to kill him.
It's a brutal death, one instigated by Af's own break, and before the angel dies, he curses Af into his current physical form and engraves it in angelic script along his hips in one last attempt at irony. It seals his true name into flesh. Without his name to move about as freely as he had before when he'd been created, he takes the angel's as a penance and doesn't return to heaven for a very long time.
Currently, Af doesn't stick to one place too long and doesn't attach himself to anyone, but even demons are capable of making the same mistakes twice. When he returns to heaven, a chance meeting with a very rigid angel by the name of Kaj has him turning his existence upside-down all over again.
